Assistive Technology Specialist (Part-Time) - Disability Support Services

Job Description:

Position Overview Conduct training classes for employees on the features of technical programs/systems. Design and develop training programs and plans. Ensures training materials are current and effective. Prepare training materials and documentation, and explain complex information to non-technical audiences. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. May work with third party vendors. Department Specific Essential Job Functions Incorporates in work activities the Student Affairs' Standard of Care Excellence Model "Listening, Understanding, Communication, and Knowledge (LUCK).Coordinates alternative print requests and production. (Includes contacting publishers, scanning and conversion of print based material into accessible formats). Oversees database management with regard to alternative print, and assistive/adaptive technology and provides statistics as requested. Creates and/or conducts training sessions regarding the use of assistive/adaptive technology and creating accessible material for faculty/staff/students. Researches, evaluates, creates and recommends innovative assistive/adaptive technology resources and tools in accordance with federal and state law for ADA stations and serves as a resource for the university community. Provides problem solving strategies for DSS computers as well as maintains assistive/adaptive technology located at ADA workstations, including reporting and coordinating repairs and upgrades to IT. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications/Experience Required Requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, IT, or related field or 4 years of equivalent work experience in chosen filed that provides knowledge of and exposure to fundamental theories, principles, and concepts. Requires the application of expertise in a chosen field to achieve results. Familiarity with assistive technologies (i.e., Dragon Naturally Speaking, Adobe Acrobat, NVDA, Zoom Text, Open Book, Jaws, Wynn , Braille Embosser, Microsoft products, D2L, and other web-based applications). Qualifications/Experience Preferred Experience working with individuals with disabilities. Thorough knowledge in assistive technologies (i.e. Dragon Naturally Speaking, Adobe Acrobat, NVDA, Zoom Text, Open Book, Jaws, Wynn, Braille Embosser, Microsoft products, D2L, and other web-based applications). Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral. Demonstrated organizational and supervisory skills. Exceptional skill in attention to detail. Experience in operating various types of computer software, equipment and instructional technologies, including PC and Apple Computer products. Physical Demands Repetitive movement of hands and fingers - typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms. Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required. The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
